Podcast: How Are Women’s Movements Fighting Backlash in South Asia?

In Episode 004 of Tong Alaap (টং আলাপ), by the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD), researchers and activists from across South Asia discuss the challenges women face in the region, including backlash against their rights and struggles for equality.

How are women navigating systemic barriers, stigmatization, and restrictive laws? What strategies have proven effective in countering backlash and driving the agenda for gender justice?

This episode draws on insights from the Sustaining Power (SuPWR) project, a five-year ESRC-funded initiative that examines when, how, and why women’s struggles to challenge power structures in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan succeed in sustaining their gains against backlash.

Moderated by Sohela Nazneen, Co-Investigator at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), the discussion features Deepta Chopra, Principal Investigator at IDS; Mubashira Zaidi, Co-Investigator & Country Lead (India) at the Institute of Social Studies Trust (ISST); Nirmala Maharjan, Co-lead researcher (Nepal) at CARE Nepal; and Maheen Sultan, Co-Investigator & Country Lead (Bangladesh) at BIGD.
